There are 254 migratory and year round bird species found at Magnolia Plantation. Bird walks are the best way to see as many of these wondrous creatures as possible. Your guide, Perry Nugent, has been actively studying birds for over fifty years, thirty-two of those years in the Charleston area. Since 1988 he has led the bird walks at Magnolia Plantation.
The entire 500 acres of Magnolia is managed as a wildlife refuge. The diversity of its accessible terrain lends itself to a broad spectrum of bird, animal and plant life. Birding at Magnolia has received national notice from various ornithological authorities. Olin Pettingill's highlights this fact in his book A Guide to Bird Finding East of the Mississippi. In it he states:
"Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, truly excellent for waterbirds, waterfowl, and small land birds."
