Perhaps the oldest unrestored garden in America, the formal Snapdragon Garden known as “Flowerdale,” dates to 1680. Enclosed by boxwoods it is made up of triangular beds filled with annuals. In the 1840s, when the garden was already 150 years old, two of America’s largest Camellia plants were added. The Victorian era cherub statue was added during the mid-19th century when such ornamentation became popular. The garden grew over time from its original 10 acres in the late 17th century to its present 50 acres by the time of the American Civil War. Flowerdale was a favorite spot of Ann Fox Drayton, the plantations original mistress and it has become the favorite spot to thousands of visitors from around the world that visit Magnolia Plantation each year.
