There are an abundance of living creatures at Magnolia Plantation, both in the Nature Center and beyond. The Zoo is home to both domesticated animals typically found on a Southern plantation and native animals unable to survive in the wild. By working with local area animal rescue groups, Magnolia is able to provide a home for orphaned deer and raccoons and injured birds. Children and adults can mingle with these animals and others while they learn the importance of conserving the environment.
Domesticated animals on the property are those common to the plantation in the 19th century. Miniature horses graze the Lawn behind the split-rail fence, while just beyond, in the Cypress Lake, ducks and geese glide across the dark waters. Colorful Malayan jungle fowl and guinea hens scurry among the shrubs in the garden. Scores of peacocks regularly patrol the walks.
Magnolia is the only historic site in the area that allows pets. Pets on leashes are welcome.
