Cooking Demonstation - Using Edible Flowers and Local Ingredients

Maria Kelly

Did you know that you can eat many of the flowers that grow in the Lowcountry throughout the year? In this demo we will explore some of the edible flowers that are currently blooming and taste the similarities and differences to understand how best to add them into our kitchen!

We will also be making a salad dressing with fresh seasonal herbs of this time of year and infusing the dressing with a local honey from Sweetgrass Gardens on John's Island.

There are so many ways to use our local resources to create beautiful, tasty, and healthy dishes. Come join us for conversation and a dive into simple culinary art!

Bio: Maria Kelly is Founder and Executive Director of AMOR Healing Kitchen, a lowcountry non-profit organization that brings teens into a kitchen to prepare meals for people facing serious health challenges, such as cancer. Taking a farm-to-table approach to healing and providing support to the community, the organization has seen the benefits of utilizing organic and local produce in their meals.

Before starting AMOR in February 2018, Maria was a high school teacher in Charleston County for 15 years and knows that the youth have so much to offer in shaping the future of our community. We have to include our youth and develop in them a sense of leadership, ownership and being connected (while being unplugged). When she learned about an organization in California that works with teens and serves people with health challenges, she had a deep feeling of connection and that something similar could work in Charleston. She believes that as a society getting back to connecting with each other and the earth, our food will help cure us of so many of our chronic diseases.
