The Monarch: Survival of a Species

Kylee Baumle

Learn details about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, the challenges it faces, and how each of us can help this iconic insect and pollinator as it struggles to not just survive, but thrive. The life and plight of monarchs has been Kylee's personal interest and area of study for more than 12 years. She leads an annual tour to the monarch overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico. Kylee is an award-winning horticulture author who has authored two books, has a weekly newspaper garden column, and writes feature articles for garden and horticultural trade magazines. Her 2017 book The Monarch: Saving our Most-Loved Butterfly is now in its 3rd printing.

Bio: What began in 2007 with her blog, Our Little Acre, led to other writing opportunities which have included feature articles in Horticulture, The American Gardener, Indiana Gardener, and State-by-State magazines, which includes Ohio Gardener. Her writing and photography have also appeared in Fine Gardening, Green Profit, Garden Center magazines, and trade catalogs, as well as several books. In 2018, she was awarded the 2018 Gold Award by the Garden Writers Association for Magazine Writing.

She is the co-author of Indoor Plant Decor: The Design Stylebook for Houseplants, published in 2013 by St. Lynn's Press. It was an Amazon Top 20 Book in its category that year. Kylee's second book, The Monarch: Saving Our Most-Loved Butterfly, was released in 2017 and is now in its 3rd printing.

The life and plight of the monarch has been Kylee’s personal interest and area of study for more than 12 years, but she shares that interest with many others. She believes that each and every one of us can make a difference when we work together and do what we are able. She wants her grandchildren to not only be able to tell the wondrous story of the monarch to their own children and grandchildren, but to be able to show it to them firsthand.
