Discover the magic of indigo dyeing in this hands-on introductory workshop at Magnolia. Learn the basics of working with natural indigo as you watch fabric transform from green to vibrant blue through an amazing color-changing process. Along the way, explore the history and traditions of indigo in the Lowcountry, then create and dye your own custom textile to take home. Perfect for curious beginners and families looking to experience this fascinating craft together.

As part of our America 250 celebration, this workshop makes history and science come alive. We will explore the cool science of color-changing chemistry and become history detectives together. We’ll look closely at the story of indigo—one of South Carolina’s most important early crops—and honor the incredible knowledge, skill, and hard work of the enslaved Africans who mastered its cultivation in the Lowcountry.
