Jenna York
Jennifer York grew up in rural Indiana, earned a BFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute and MFA in Fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design. York founded Jennythreads Studio in Asheville, NC producing handmade apparel for 20 years. In 2013, her book, “Printing on Fabric: Techniques with Screens, Stencils, Inks and Dyes” was published by Lark Crafts. In 2018-19, she traveled abroad for several art residencies in Bulgaria, Mexico, Finland, and Greece, sparking her current body of intricately illlustrated art.
York relocated to Charleston in March 2020, creating pictorial dioramas in vintage suitcases and mirrors, and large-scale papercuts from tyvek house wrap. She was named 2024 Griffith-Reyburn Lowcountry Artist of the Year. Solo exhibitions include “New Histories'' at the Gibbes Museum of Art, “Estuary Blues” at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum, and “Thunder and Wonder” at Francis Marion University, with two papercut artworks in the collection of the MUSC Foundation.
Outside the studio, York is an avid runner, cyclist, and SC journeyman beekeeper. She lives near Folly Beach with her husband, two cats, and thousands of honeybees.
