Lowcountry Wildlife Spotlight: Getting to Know Corn Dog the Corn Snake
We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the Wildlife Center recently for our special reptile meet and greet. It was wonderful seeing so many smiling faces and curious minds connecting with our resident corn snake, Corn Dog! He certainly loved all the attention, and events like these are exactly why we love sharing the incredible wildlife of the Lowcountry with our community.
Many of our guests asked how these beautiful reptiles got their unique name. Historically, they were frequently found near grain stores and corn silos because they are excellent at hunting mice and rats that raid the crops. If you look closely at their bellies, they feature a distinctive checkerboard pattern of black and white scales that closely resembles a kernel of Indian corn.
This educational programming wouldn't be possible without our amazing team, and we want to give a special shout-out to one of our newest volunteers who helped lead the session. She did a fantastic job introducing Corn Dog to our guests! We are incredibly thankful for our volunteers because they are the heart of Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. If you would like to get in on the action, please check out the volunteer section on our website for more information on how to join our team.
Missed this meet and greet? Don't worry! The Wildlife Center hosts engaging educational programming throughout the month. When you visit us in Charleston, make sure to check the daily schedule sign located right by the Peacock Cafe to see what exciting animal encounters are happening each day. Plus, remember that there is an animal feeding every single afternoon at 3:00 PM. We are so excited to see you at the Wildlife Center soon for your next great adventure!
