Roots, Shoots, and Expert Advice: The Magnolia Plantation & Gardens Spring Plant Sale
Spring has officially arrived in the Lowcountry, and there is no better way to celebrate the season of renewal than by visiting the historic grounds of Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. On April 25th and 26th, we are hosting our annual Spring Plant Sale, a premier event for local gardeners, landscape enthusiasts, and anyone looking to add a touch of botanical magic to their home. While the sprawling selection of rare camellias and native perennials is enough to draw a crowd, this year’s event features an extraordinary lineup of guest speakers ready to share their horticultural wisdom and help your garden thrive in the unique South Carolina climate.
Expert Insights from the Magnolia Team
We are especially thrilled to feature our very own leaders who keep Magnolia’s grounds world-class. Jim Martin, our Director Horticulture and Landscape, will be sharing his expertise through two highly anticipated presentations: "Container Planting for Late Spring and Summer" and "A Few of My Favorite Things – Hot Plants!" These sessions are a must-attend for anyone looking to learn directly from the visionary behind our historic gardens.
Joining him from the Magnolia Plant Collections Team are Mike Brewer and Gentry Massey-Williams. Their session, "Shrub Life: Growing Shrubs in Charleston," is a deep dive into the foundational plants of any Southern landscape. As the experts behind our daily garden operations, Gentry and Mike possess unparalleled insight into which shrubs thrive in our specific coastal climate. They will provide professional advice on proper planting techniques and ongoing care to ensure your garden remains lush and vibrant for years to come.
Sustainable Secrets and Pollinator Power
The weekend highlights include Kate Van Cantfort, who will delve into the essential practices of Southern Sustainable Gardening. Kate plans to guide attendees through the immediate steps they can take to improve their gardens right now, offering a deep dive into eco-friendly options for the modern yard. For those looking to give their soil a natural boost, she will also be selling worm castings, a powerful organic fertilizer that works wonders for plant health and soil structure.
Understanding the delicate relationship between insects and flora is also crucial for any flourishing landscape.Lindsay Lennen, a Certified Beekeeper and member of the Charleston Community Bee Gardens and South Carolina Beekeepers Association, will lead a fascinating session titled "Bees, Plants, & Pollination." Drawing from her experience managing three hives in West Ashley, Lindsay will explain how bees interact with the Heritage Garden and Cabin Garden at Magnolia. Her talk offers a unique glimpse into what bees collect and how they sustain the biodiversity of our historic grounds.
Building Healthy Landscapes with Native Plants
Protecting the unique environment of the Lowcountry starts with the species we choose to plant. Paula Carr, representing the Lowcountry Chapter of the South Carolina Native Plant Society, will present a compelling talk on "Native Plants: Building Healthy Landscapes." Paula will define what truly constitutes a native species and explain why these plants are critical for supporting local wildlife and ensuring long-term sustainability. This session is designed to inspire gardeners to contribute to the protection of our cherished local land while creating beautiful, resilient outdoor spaces. Join us for a weekend of community, education, and botanical beauty as we celebrate the very best of Charleston's gardening scene.
