A First Look at Our New Heritage Garden
If you’ve taken a ride on our popular Nature Train recently, you may have noticed something truly special taking root along the tracks. We’re excited to share a sneak peek of our brand-new Heritage Garden, a living centerpiece of our highly anticipated Journey to Indigo exhibition!
Created in commemoration of the United States' semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) in 2026, Journey to Indigo is designed to immerse guests in the rich agricultural, historical, and cultural legacy of the Lowcountry's most fascinating historic crop.
This isn’t just a visual display; it’s an interactive story brought to life. Starting right here as a tiny seed planted in the Heritage Garden, visitors can follow the indigo plant's transformation step-by-step, all the way to its final form as the iconic deep blue dye that shaped global economies and local communities.
Watch History Grow in Real-Time
The Heritage Garden offers a living, breathing introduction to this complex historical journey. With each passing day, the new indigo crops will flourish, giving summer visitors a real-time look at the early stages of historic indigo cultivation. It’s a vibrant, evolving botanical space that connects the past to the present in a truly unique way.
As you ride the Nature Train, keep an eye on the tracks and watch our garden grow—this is only the beginning of the story!
The Journey to Indigo exhibit officially launches on August 1st, 2026. Guests visiting during the summer can view the early crop growth from the Nature Train ahead of the full exhibition opening.
