Camellia Season at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

One of the most common questions we hear each year is: When is the best time to see the camellias in bloom? The answer is simple, right now. After moving through the coldest stretch of winter, the gardens have come alive with camellias bursting into color in every direction. Their elegant blooms, ranging from soft blush to deep crimson, create a breathtaking display that signals the true arrival of the season.

As we move into March and April, camellia grafting season begins. Grafting is a horticultural practice that joins two plant parts, so they grow together as one, allowing us to preserve and propagate specific, desirable traits. Typically, a rare or particularly beautiful camellia is grafted onto the rootstock of a hardier, more common variety, ensuring both resilience and the continuation of exceptional blooms.

Another propagation method we practice is air layering, which encourages a branch to form roots while still attached to the parent plant, resulting in a new, genetically identical plant. The process involves removing about an inch of bark from around the stem to expose the inner layer, then wrapping the area in moist sphagnum moss to stimulate root development. Once a strong root system has formed, the stem is cut from the parent plant and transplanted.

There’s no better time to visit Magnolia than now, when the camellias are at their peak. Strolling through the gardens, you’ll be surrounded by a stunning palette of colors, each bloom a testament to careful cultivation and the beauty of the season. The camellias in full bloom is a breathtaking way to celebrate spring at Magnolia.
