Join us for Sweetgrass Basket Workshops with Jennifaye!
Experience the beauty of a time-honored craft in a special hands-on class with Jennifaye Singleton of Geechee Gyal Baskets. This immersive workshop invites participants to the Magnolia Workshop from 11AM-1PM or 2PM-4PM on Saturday, February 28th, to create their own one-of-a-kind sweetgrass basket while learning about the deep cultural roots behind the art form.
Jennifaye has been sewing sweetgrass baskets since 1990, a skill she learned from her aunt and one that has been lovingly passed down through generations. In the Gullah Geechee tradition, sweetgrass basket making is viewed as a gift from God, a sacred practice rooted in history, faith, and family. There are no set patterns in sweetgrass basket sewing. Each basket requires patience, creativity, and intention, allowing every artist to develop their own style. No two baskets are ever the same, making each finished piece a true reflection of its maker.
If you’re new to basket weaving or eager to connect with a living cultural tradition, this class offers a rare opportunity to learn, create, and carry home a meaningful work of art shaped by history and heart.
