Frequently Asked Questions About Alligators
What do alligators eat, and how often do they feed?
In the wild, alligators are opportunistic carnivores, eating fish, turtles, birds, and small mammals. Because they are cold-blooded reptiles, their metabolism is much slower than ours, meaning they don't need to eat every day—especially during cooler months!
How can you tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile?
The easiest giveaway is their snout shape and teeth! Alligators have wide, rounded, U-shaped snouts and live primarily in freshwater. When their mouths are closed, their lower teeth are hidden. Crocodiles have pointier, V-shaped snouts, prefer saltwater, and have a prominent lower tooth that remains visible even when their mouth is shut.
